The Dental services in Saudi Arabia
The Number of dental clinics
 Since 1405H to 1418 H the number of primary care centers had increased from 319 to 864 centers, the number of hospitals increased from 233 to 285 hospital and the number of specialized  dental centers from none in 1405 H to 228 center. In total the number of dental clinics had increased from 552 clinics in 1405 H to 1377 clinics in 1418 H.

The Dental Laboratories:

In 1405H only 3 laboratories (Acrylic) existed in Riyadh, Mecca Al-Mukarramah and Al-madinah Al-munawwarah the number had increased today to 32 full equipped laboratories and 25 Dental labs for Acrylic work distributed over all regions of the Kingdom.

The Specialized Dental Centers:
These Centers provide the highest quality of dental care services , the first center was open in Riyadh in 1406H then other centers were opened in different regions, Today all areas of the Kingdoms has specialized dental centers. There is 20 Dental centers consist of 228 dental clinics ,specialeties include orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Pedodontics, Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics and Oral Pathology.
In 1413H Dental Implantology was introduced as a service rendered by the Ministry of Health dental Centers.

Preventive Dentistry:
The Importance of Preventive Dentistry was realized and the idea of Water Fluoridation was implemented in the Kingdom  of Saudi Arabia at a ratio of 0.6-0.7 mm/l for the  bottled water .
Three preventive programs were launched:
1- School children oral health education program started 9 years ago for the 1st and 4th grade school children sponsored by national companies
2- The implementation of Oral health care programe for Pregnant women and preschoolers
3- Progressive treatment program: whereby a dental check up is rendered to school children at the age of 6 then they get treated and followed up another check up is made at the age of 9 (4th grade). Later the program included all Primary school children.
4- In collaboration with the WHO The map of Oral and Dental diseases in each area was put by the preventive team .
5- Topical fluoride gel  and fissure sealant for children
6- A team Specialized in Preventive Dentistry was formed to put the basic guidelines for prevention in Dentistry in the Kingdom and evaluate the outcome of different preventive programs and adjust the different programs according to the need of each area.
Mobile dental Clinics (  32 clinic)and Portable dental chairs (72 )were used to conduct different  programs in schools in suburbs and small villages

Advances In training and Dental Education
Continuos Dental education programs were adapted over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
The Ministry of health conduct an International dental meeting or conference every two years inviting international American and European speakers in collaboration with different directorates of health affairs.
The Sponsorship of higher or Postgraduate education for Dentists Specializing outside the Kingdom in Different Dental Sciences according to the need of the Kingdom.
The Directorate of Dentistry established an academic training program for Dental assistants, Hygienists and Laboratory technicians In collaboration with different Health institutes and colleges in the Kingdom.
The supervision of different continuos education programs conducted by companies and Private as well as government establishments
The Monitoring of new Academic and technical advancement in dentistry and it implementation over the country.

Technology, Dental equipment and Materials
The Directorate of Dentistry in the ministry of health had followed up all new advancement in Dental technology and materials. Also Provided necessary equipment's in its centers.
The Ministry also  Implemented Infection control methods and substituting the old dry hot air machines with new Autoclaves machines and monitor the infection control practice in the dental clinics through Sterilization and Personal protective methods.
The Dental Materials used in the dental clinics are used according to international acceptance and the ISO 9000 and CE accreditation.
