Dental
x-rays are a necessary part (adjunct) of a comprehensive dental examination.
An accurate diagnosis of normal as well as abnormal conditions of
the mouth, head and neck can only be reached through a complete examination.
Dental x-rays are very safe today with the use of high speed film
and modern equipment which exposes only the area of the mouth needed
to be seen by the dentist. A lead apron is placed over the patient's
body so as not to expose areas not examined by the dentist. Without
dental x-rays a dentist cannot see decay under the gums (on the roots
of teeth), between teeth, under fillings or caps and bridges.
Teeth would be lost unnecessarily due to bone loss (of periodontal
disease), if dental x-rays were not part of the usual, customary dental
exam. When you see a dentist for the first time, a full series of
x-rays would be part of an initial dental exam. Periodic examinations
are followed up with check-up x-rays and emergency exams are accompanied
by specialized focused x-rays. If you have any questions concerning
dental examination x-rays, call your New Jersey Dental Association
dentist.
